Parkland Criminal History Records
Parkland criminal history records are maintained by Pierce County because Parkland is an unincorporated community with no incorporated city government. The Pierce County Sheriff's Department provides law enforcement and holds arrest records for the area. Misdemeanor cases go to the Pierce County District Court, and felony cases are filed in the Pierce County Superior Court. Both courts operate in Tacoma. For a statewide background check, the Washington State Patrol WATCH system covers all Pierce County convictions in a single online search.
Parkland Overview
Pierce County Sheriff Records Division
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department provides law enforcement services to Parkland and maintains arrest records, incident reports, and jail booking information for the area. Because Parkland is unincorporated, the Sheriff is the primary law enforcement agency for the community. All public records requests for law enforcement documents in Parkland go through the Sheriff's Department Records Division.
Requests can be submitted in person, by mail, or online through the county system. The department operates under the Washington Public Records Act, RCW 42.56, and must respond within five business days. Conviction records are public. Non-conviction data, meaning arrests that did not result in a conviction and where the case is no longer active, is restricted under RCW 10.97 and will be redacted before any public release. Active investigation files are generally exempt until a case closes.
When submitting a request to the Sheriff, provide as much detail as possible: the incident date, the report number if you have it, and the name of the subject. This speeds up the search. Copy fees follow state law and are limited to actual reproduction costs. The Pierce County Sheriff serves one of the largest counties in Washington by population, and Parkland is one of the more densely populated unincorporated communities in the county.
Pierce County District Court
Misdemeanor criminal cases from Parkland are heard at the Pierce County District Court. The District Court handles misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors, traffic violations, and civil claims under $100,000. Because Parkland has no incorporated city government, there is no separate municipal court. All misdemeanor cases for Parkland residents go directly to the county court system in Tacoma.
Pierce County District Court cases appear in the Washington Courts Odyssey Portal for free. The portal shows party names, case numbers, charges, and dispositions. For copies of actual documents, contact the District Court clerk. Non-certified copies cost $0.50 per page; certified copies start at $5.00 for the first page plus $1.00 for each additional page. Call ahead to confirm fees and office hours before making the trip to Tacoma.
Common misdemeanor cases for Parkland residents in the District Court include DUI, simple assault, misdemeanor theft, and violations of no-contact orders. Pierce County has a busy court system, so checking the Odyssey Portal before visiting in person can save significant time. The portal will also tell you if a case has moved to the Superior Court for felony charges.
Pierce County Superior Court Felony Records
Felony cases for Parkland residents are filed with the Pierce County Superior Court. The Clerk of Superior Court maintains all felony criminal case files for Pierce County, including charging documents, plea agreements, sentencing orders, and final judgments. Pierce County is home to Tacoma and has one of the higher volumes of criminal filings among Washington counties. The courthouse is in Tacoma.
Cases can be searched in the Odyssey Portal for free. For certified copies or full document sets, contact the Superior Court clerk in Tacoma. The clerk's office is open Monday through Friday during normal business hours. If you are looking at a serious charge, robbery, burglary, assault, or felony drug offenses, the case record will be in the Superior Court. Standard per-page copy rates apply.
The Pierce County Superior Court case records page provides access to court files and outlines the request process for Parkland and all Pierce County residents.
Felony case records for Parkland residents are held by the Pierce County Superior Court and can be accessed in person in Tacoma or searched online through the Odyssey Portal.
WSP WATCH Background Checks
The Washington State Patrol's WATCH system provides the most complete statewide criminal history check for $11.00 per online search. Results return immediately. WATCH uses a fingerprint-linked database covering all 39 Washington counties, including Pierce. This is more reliable than a name-only court search because it ties records to fingerprints rather than name spelling.
Mail requests cost $32.00 for a name-based check or $58.00 with a fingerprint card. Processing by mail takes about 7 to 10 business days. In-person requests are accepted at the WSP Criminal History Records office at 106 11th Ave SW, Suite 1300, Olympia, WA 98501, open Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (closed noon to 1:00 p.m.). Full instructions and forms are at the WSP Criminal History Records page.
WATCH results include conviction records and recent arrests with pending dispositions. Older non-conviction entries do not appear for public users. Subjects who want to review their own full record, including non-conviction data, can do so in person at the Olympia WSP office at no charge for up to 30 minutes with a valid government-issued photo ID.
Pierce County Public Records
For county agency records outside the court system, Pierce County Public Records Requests offers an online portal for submitting requests. This covers Sheriff's Department records, county department emails, permits, and similar documents. Court records must be requested separately from the court clerks under Washington Court General Rule 31.
Under RCW 42.56.520, Pierce County must respond within five business days of receiving a request. Fees cover only reproduction costs. You do not need to state a reason for requesting records. If the county denies your request, it must provide a specific statutory exemption as the basis for the denial.
Conviction vs. Non-Conviction Data
Washington's Criminal Records Privacy Act, RCW 10.97, separates conviction records from non-conviction data. Conviction records, cases that ended in a guilty plea, verdict, or other adverse disposition, are public and can be released to anyone. Non-conviction data, covering closed cases that did not result in a conviction, can only go to criminal justice agencies or to the subject of the record per RCW 10.97.030.
Agencies must redact non-conviction entries before releasing records to any third party. If your own record contains errors, you can challenge them by filing a Request for Modification of Record Form with the Washington State Patrol Criminal History Records Section. If the challenge is substantiated, the record is corrected. RCW 10.97.060 covers the rules for deleting old non-conviction entries when specified conditions are met.
DOC Inmate Search and Sex Offender Registry
To find a Parkland resident currently housed in a Washington state prison, use the Department of Corrections Incarcerated Search. The database shows name, DOC number, age, and current facility. For release dates or supervision conditions, contact DOC directly. Federal inmates are not included in the DOC database; check the Federal Bureau of Prisons site for those.
Registered sex offenders in Parkland register with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department under RCW 9A.44.130. The public registry is at WASPC Sex Offender Information. Class A sex offense convictions require lifetime registration; Class B carries 15 years; Class C requires 10 years.
Historical Records
Older Pierce County criminal case records that predate the Odyssey Portal may be available through the Washington State Digital Archives. The Puget Sound regional branch in Olympia serves Pierce County. Some Superior Court records go back many decades. Availability varies by case type and year.
