Puyallup Police Department Records
The Puyallup Police Department Records Division processes requests for police reports, incident reports, and other law enforcement records. Requests can be submitted online, by mail, or in person at the Police Department. The department follows the Washington Public Records Act, Chapter 42.56 RCW, and the Criminal Records Privacy Act.
Conviction records held by the department are public. Non-conviction data, meaning arrests where the case ended without a conviction, is restricted under RCW 10.97. That law limits release of non-conviction data to criminal justice agencies and to the subject of the record. If your request pulls up an arrest with no conviction, the department will redact that portion before releasing the file.
Records on active investigations are generally exempt while the case is open. Once closed, most records become accessible. If a request is denied, the department must provide the specific statutory reason. You can appeal a denial to the Pierce County Superior Court.
Pierce County District Court
Some misdemeanor cases involving Puyallup residents may go to Pierce County District Court rather than the Puyallup Municipal Court, depending on where the offense occurred and how the case was charged. The District Court handles misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors for unincorporated Pierce County and some cities. Court records are public and can be requested online, by mail, or in person.
Pierce County District Court also maintains a public records request process through the county's central system. The Pierce County Public Records portal allows requestors to submit requests and track their status online. The county must respond within five business days under RCW 42.56.520.

This covers things like city meeting minutes, permits, and other administrative files. Under RCW 42.56.520, the city must respond to any public records request within five business days. You don't need to give a reason for your request. Fees cover only actual copying costs.
Statewide Background Checks Through WSP WATCH
For a complete criminal history on a Puyallup resident, the Washington State Patrol WATCH system gives the most comprehensive result. The WATCH online search costs $11.00, accepts credit or debit cards, and returns results immediately. It draws from a fingerprint-linked statewide database, so it is more reliable than a name search at any single court.
Mail requests are also available. Name-based mail searches cost $32.00. Fingerprint-based searches cost $58.00 and provide a more precise match. Mail processing takes about 7 to 10 business days. The WSP Criminal History office is at 106 11th Ave SW Suite 1300, Olympia, WA 98501, open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Full instructions are at the WSP Criminal History Records page.
To review your own record, including non-conviction data, visit the Olympia office in person at no charge for up to thirty minutes. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. You may be fingerprinted for identity confirmation. The personal review shows everything in the record, including data not released to the general public.
Conviction vs. Non-Conviction Data
Washington's Criminal Records Privacy Act, RCW 10.97, sets the rules for what records agencies can release. Conviction records are public under RCW 10.97.050. These cover guilty pleas, verdicts of guilty, and other adverse dispositions. Any member of the public can get them.
Non-conviction data covers arrests and charges that did not end in a conviction and are no longer active. Under RCW 10.97.030, only criminal justice agencies and the subject of the record can receive this data. If a record holds both conviction and non-conviction data, the agency must redact the non-conviction parts before any public release.
If you think your own record has errors, file a Request for Modification of Record Form with the Washington State Patrol. The Criminal History Records Section reviews the challenge and corrects the record if the claim holds up. Old non-conviction records can be deleted under RCW 10.97.060 if certain conditions are met, including no prior convictions and completion of required waiting periods.
DOC Inmate Search and Sex Offender Registry
To find a Puyallup-area resident currently in a Washington state prison, use the Department of Corrections Incarcerated Search. The database shows name, DOC number, current facility, and age. Contact DOC directly for release dates or supervision conditions. Federal inmates are not in this database. Check the Federal Bureau of Prisons website for those.
The statewide sex offender registry is maintained by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs. Search it at WASPC Sex Offender Information. Class A sex offense convictions require lifetime registration. Class B requires fifteen years. Class C requires ten years. Offenders must register at the Sheriff's Office in their county of residence under RCW 9A.44.130.
